Eggs may help prevent heart disease and cancer

More and more evidence that not only does eating eggs not cause high blood cholesterol but are loaded with beneficial nutrients and a very healthy food for us to eat. – J. Foster  Get cracking: Eggs may help prevent heart disease and cancer

(Medical Xpress) — One of nature’s most perfect foods may be even better for us than previously thought.
While eggs are well known to be an excellent source of proteins, lipids, vitamins and minerals, researchers at the University of Alberta recently discovered they also contain , which help in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Jianping Wu, Andreas Schieber and graduate students Chamila Nimalaratne and Daise Lopes-Lutz examined egg yolks produced by hens fed typical diets of either primarily wheat or corn. They found the yolks contained two amino acids, tryptophan and tyrosine, which have high antioxidant properties.
After analyzing the properties, the researchers determined that two egg yolks in their raw state have almost twice as many antioxidant properties as an apple and about the same as half a serving (25 grams) of cranberries.
However, when the eggs were fried or boiled, antioxidant properties were reduced by about half, and a little more than half if the eggs were cooked in a microwave.
“It’s a big reduction but it still leaves eggs equal to apples in their antioxidant value,” said Wu.
The discovery of these two amino acids, while important, may only signify the beginning of finding antioxidant properties in egg yolks, says Wu.
“Ultimately, we’re trying to map antioxidants in egg yolks so we have to look at all of the properties in the yolks that could contain antioxidants, as well as how the eggs are ingested,” said Wu, adding that he and his team will examine the other type of antioxidant already know to be in eggs, carotenoids, the yellow pigment in egg yolk, as well as peptides.
In previous research, Wu found that egg proteins were converted by enzymes in the stomach and small intestines and produced peptides that act the same way as ACE inhibitors, prescriptions drugs that are used to lower high blood pressure.
That finding defied common wisdom and contradicted the public perception that eggs increased high blood pressure because of their high cholesterol content. Additional research by Wu suggests the peptides can be formulated to help prevent and treat hypertension.
Wu is convinced the peptides also have some antioxidant properties, which leads him to suggest that when he completes the next step in his research, the result will likely be that have more antioxidant properties than we currently know.
The findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal Food Chemistry.

A Low Carbohydrate, High Protein Diet Slows Tumor Growth and Prevents Cancer Initiation

New evidence that a low carbohydrate diet not only helps with weight loss, but may be a key to cancer prevention.  We know that low carb diets lower insulin and high insulin may severely increase the risk of certain cancers, including breast cancer.  By following a low carb diet, you lower insulin levels and this may be the mechanism behind the results seen in the following article. – J.Foster

A Low Carbohydrate, High Protein Diet Slows Tumor Growth and Prevents Cancer Initiation

Since cancer cells depend on glucose more than normal cells, we compared the effects of low carbohydrate (CHO) diets to a Western diet on the growth rate of tumors in mice. To avoid caloric restriction–induced effects, we designed the low CHO diets isocaloric with the Western diet by increasing protein rather than fat levels because of the reported tumor-promoting effects of high fat and the immune-stimulating effects of high protein. We found that both murine and human carcinomas grew slower in mice on diets containing low amylose CHO and high protein compared with a Western diet characterized by relatively high CHO and low protein. There was no weight difference between the tumor-bearing mice on the low CHO or Western diets.
Additionally, the low CHO-fed mice exhibited lower blood glucose, insulin, and lactate levels. Additive antitumor effects with the low CHO diets were observed with the mTOR inhibitor CCI-779 and especially with the COX-2 inhibitor Celebrex, a potent anti-inflammatory drug. Strikingly, in a genetically engineered mouse model of HER-2/neu–induced mammary cancer, tumor penetrance in mice on a Western diet was nearly 50% by the age of 1 year whereas no tumors were detected in mice on the low CHO diet. This difference was associated with weight gains in mice on the Western diet not observed in mice on the low CHO diet. Moreover, whereas only 1 mouse on the Western diet achieved a normal life span, due to cancer-associated deaths, more than 50% of the mice on the low CHO diet reached or exceeded the normal life span. Taken together, our findings offer a compelling preclinical illustration of the ability of a low CHO diet in not only restricting weight gain but also cancer development and progression. Healthy Fast Foods Blasted

The Physician’s Commitee for Responsible Medicine has studied so called “Healthy ” fast foods and came up with some astonishing facts.
We should all be thankful that there is someone like them around that will tell the truth, so we can make our own choices.
This type of expose and the public reaction it generates often helps to push the food industry into making healthier foods for us.

Worst ‘Healthy’ Fast Food:

May 21, 2011
Think you’re being healthful and saving some calories by ordering the salad or oatmeal?

Don’t be so sure, says the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

The group recently tested the nutritional content of some items that fast food establishments are promoting as healthy. The group found they were far from it. Some of the items were packed with more fat, sodium, and sugar than anyone should eat in an entire day.

The group found the worst offenders were Wendy’s Baja Salad, with almost twice the recommended amount of sodium for an entire day, and McDonald’s Fruit & Maple Oatmeal, with more calories than a hamburger and more sugar than many candy bars.

Your health and your waistline will thank you for saying no to these so-called healthy foods,” PCRM nutrition education director Susan Levin said in a statement. “Fast-food chains hope to cash in on consumer ignorance with labels like “fat-free” and “low calorie.”The five worst “healthy” fast food items:

Wendy’s Baja Salad: Contains 1,990 milligrams of sodium, more than should be consumed in an entire day.

McDonald’s Fruit & Maple Oatmeal: Contains more sugar than a Snickers Bar.

Subway Fresh Fit 6-Inch Turkey Breast Sub: With standards such as cheese and mayo, this “low-fat” sandwich jumps to 24 grams of fat. Contains processed meat, which is linked to increased cancer risk.

Sonic Strawberry Smoothie: Contains more sugar than five Twinkies.

KFC Kentucky Grilled Chicken: Contains PhIP, a chemical classified as a carcinogen by the federal government.

CDC: 1 in 6 has developmental disability

Since 1997, studies show a 15% increase in children with developmental disabilities mostly due to the increase in ADHD.
(see entire article below)

We have seen that developmental difficulties and ADHD are often due to Aluminum Toxicity, Food Intolerances and undiagnosed nutritional deficiencies.
The increase in Aluminum in vaccines over the past few years may explain some of this increase.
We know that ADHD is not due to a Ritalin or Adderal defiency, but that’s the way they treat it.
I beliee this tremendous increase says two things: 1) That we better really start looking for the source of these problems and 2) whatever they’ve been doing thus far has not been working.  Maybe they should try the natural approach first!”

Developmental disabilities on rise

 in American kids

CDC says most of increase due to ADHD diagnoses
Thomas H. Maugh Ii Los Angeles Times

Experts said that physicians may now be more likely to diagnose ADHD for children who, in the past, might have been dismissed simply as slow or unruly. Such a diagnosis allows treatment of the children with drugs such as Ritalin, which can reduce misbehavior in the classroom – but which can also make children less responsive.

LOS ANGELES – One in every six American children now has a developmental disability, a 15 percent increase since 1997, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Monday. The increase is due almost entirely to an increase in the prevalence of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and is based on reports by parents during a telephone survey, researchers reported in the journal Pediatrics.

But because ADHD has become a catchall phrase for a variety of behavioral problems in schools and elsewhere, it is not clear whether the increase represents a real upsurge in such developmental delays or simply parental and physician attribution of old behaviors to a disorder that might be treated with drugs.

The data came from the 1997-2008 National Health Interview Surveys, annual telephone surveys in which interviewers question a representative sample of households about health issues. Parents were asked if their children ages 3 to 17 had been diagnosed with ADHD, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, autism, seizures, stuttering or stammering, moderate to profound hearing loss, blindness, learning disorders or other developmental delays of any sort.

In 1997-’99, 12.84 percent of children were reported to have such a disability. By 2006-’08, that proportion had risen to 15.04 percent, an increase of 1.8 million that brought the total number of affected kids to nearly 10 million. The bulk of that increase was accounted for by ADHD, up from 5.7 percent to 7.6 percent. The rate of autism also showed a significant increase, up from 0.19 percent to 0.74 percent. Profound hearing loss declined slightly, but the rate of most other problems remained constant. The general category “other developmental delays,” however, showed an increase from 3.4 percent to 4.24 percent.

Boys had the lowest prevalence for most disabilities, while low-income families and those with public-health insurance had the highest prevalence. Hispanic children had the lowest rates of most disabilities.

Some of the increase in disabilities may be due to advancing medical technology. Parents are increasingly being given assistance to have children at older ages, which may increase the risk of problems, and growing numbers of children are being born through assisted reproduction technology, which also involves risks. Better technology is also increasing the survival of children born prematurely, and such children have a much higher risk of developing developmental problems.

FTC Issues ‘Stronger Order’ Against Kellogg

Kellogg Company, from Battle Creek, MI, has agreed to new advertising restrictions pursuant to an FTC investigation. The FTC was looking into questionable claims that Rice Krispies cereal helped children’s immune system due to the antioxidants in the cereal. This follows an earlier FTC settlement order that stopped Kelloggs from claiming that their ‘Frosted Mini Wheats’ was clinically shown to improve children’s attentiveness by almost 20%, which was unsubstantiated.

Our experience is that by avoiding high carbohydrate and high sugared foods, like the above cereals and instead feeding your kids nutritious protein at breakfast is the best way to help your kids learn. Nutritious proteins include egg, seafood, fowl, meats or our STAR Protein Powder. The fact is that every single neurotransmitter in the brain comes from dietary protein. If you don’t feed yourself and your kid’s brain with protein every morning, they won’t be able to do as well as if they do have protein.

FDA “Expert Panel” Recommends Against Putting Warning Labels on Foods with Artificial Colors.

Same stuff, different day at the FDA.  We were all excited when we heard the FDA was banning or at least putting warning labels on foods containing artificial colors, like Red #3 and Yellow #5. The warnings would state that children with ADHD may have their symptoms aggravated by those harmful chemicals.  But, when I heard the FDA was convening an expert panel to help decide, I correctly guessed the outcome.  The panel recommended against even puttting warning lables on those foods.

On my radio show on 4-18-11, Jane Hersey, from the Feingold Association (www.feingold.org or www.adhddiet.org) reported that the final vote was 8-6 against the warnings.  I wonder how many of the 8 voting against the action were representatives from the food industry?  You can get more inforrmation on the association and the hearings at their websites, above. You can also listen to a taped broadcast of the show on our website at www.1800chemist.com/healthconnection.

Years ago, due to all the deaths reported from the COX-2 inhibitors (Vioxx, Celebrex and Bextra), the FDA convened an “expert panel” to decide.  The New York Times reported that the panel was heavily seeded  with representatives from the pharmaceutical industry. The panel voted on bringing back Vioxx to the market and if Bextra and Celebrex should be taken off..  No surprise that the drug reps voted to keep them all on the market, despite major safety concerns.

Same thing, different day at the FDA.

Mercury In New Light Bulbs!

Congress is mandating that all regular incandescent light bulbs be phased out by 2014 and replaced by CFL’s or Compact Flourescent Lightbulbs.
Although they save energy, there are several problems with the new bulbs, including Mercury Toxicity.  Read below or click on link for entire story.

As if the danger to our health by using the CFL’s isn’t enough, the bulbs also contain mercury.
When they break or of disposed of improperly, exposure to this toxin is guaranteed.
“all CFL bulbs contain – at least – four to five milligrams of mercury, about 200 times the amount of mercury in a flu vaccine shot. There is enough mercury in each CFL bulb to contaminate 6,000 gallons of clean water. To break one of these CFL bulbs is to risk ruining the health of one’s entire family, or office staff, with enough released atmospheric mercury to best require the expensive, professional services of a Haz/Mat Removal Team.”              http://healthfreedoms.org/2010/03/17/stock-up-on-incandescent-light-bulbs-in-fact-buy-a-lifetime-supply-of-them
The EPA provides a four step program on how to safely dispose of a broken CFL. The first step is to open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes; next, clean up the glass with duct tape; third step is to seal broken glass into a glass jar; then you have to take the container to a special dump that can handle the toxic waste. But this is hardly enough to keep you and your family from being exposed. The truth is though waiting 15 minutes and coming back armed with duct-tape does not offer you protection from the mercury.
Really, only the first step in the EPA’s plan is safe- walk away. Amalgams that contain mercury are kept in boxes lined with lead and are collected by special hazardous-materials cleaning teams to carry out removal, the doctor wears a mask during the removal process and special precautions are taken so the patient does not inhale the fumes during placing or removal. Mercury is mercury- exposure is dangerous.
So what should really happen when a bulb is broken?
Here is the safety protocol outlined by a hazardous materials removal company:
To protect your family and employees against dangerous mercury exposure, Mercury Instruments USA provides clean up, decontamination and screening in the case of a broken mercury containing light bulb. All of our cleaning services are backed by screening the area with the Mercury Tracker 3000 mercury detector.
CFL’s contain dangerous levels mercury
  1. If you break a compact fluorescent light – CFL
    1. Immediately turn off heating or air conditioning units
    2. Call us at 303-972-3740 or after normal business hours at 720-203-5224
    3. Open windows for ventilation
    4. Leave the contaminated area immediately, unless there is a chance that some of the broken light bulb got on your clothing, then stay put until we get there or you may risk contaminating other areas!
  1. Things Not to Do!
    1. Do Not Use Vacuum Cleaner
    2. Do not walk through broken glass
It’s hard to imagine that all of the CFL bulbs that have broken have been disposed of properly. I am also sure that there are a number of people that aren’t even aware of the dangers and took no precautions when cleaning or handling broken bulbs.
And our environment? This is where mercury laden CFL bulbs do their most serious damage to everyone of us. This is the same environment that our hordes of”Greenies” are so concerned about dying from global warming. But unknown to our greenie friends, already there are hundreds of millions of disposed CFL bulbs that have contaminated personal garbage cans, fleets of garbage trucks (spreading their toxicity near and far), and garbage disposal sites, that are doing irreparable damage to our ground water, except when such garbage is burnt; then, mercury is released into the very air we all breathe. You see there are precious few toxic dump sites in the world equipped to handle mercury, the most dangerous element in the world, after radio-active materials. http://healthfreedoms.org/2010/03/17/stock-up-on-incandescent-light-bulbs-in-fact-buy-a-lifetime-supply-of-them/
